We are investigating the use of JMP with SIMS 2000. We would like to replace SAS, if possible, since the SAS licensing is expensive.

What are your thoughts on this; would it be advantageous, or at least equal, for us to use JMP rather than SAS?

Hi Mary -

SAS is highly recommended if your Sensory Technician is planning on running serious statistical reports via SIMS.

JMP (also a SAS Institute Inc. product) is an alternative, and cheaper, but reduced report functionality in SIMS.

SIMS software does support JMP and Excel for the Sensory Test Top Line Table Report, which is the most common and important statistical report for many clients. SIMS also supports JMP, SPSS and Excel for Raw Data exporting, along with CAMO Unscrambler, Statistica, Text, and others.

You can switch to JMP if the only SIMS statistical report you use is the Sensory Test Top Line Table Report.

Other SIMS Stat reports will not work with JMP, including Cross Tabs Analysis, T2/B2 T3/B3, and Continuous Time Intensity, in which case SAS is required. These reports will include the statistics sections only with SAS available.

SAS remains the #1 dominant Statistics tool in the Sensory industry. All of SIMS Statistical Reports are designed for SAS, including the Sensory Test Top Line Table Report, Cross Tabs / Sub Groups Analysis, Top 2 / Bottom 2, T3/B3, and Continuous Time Intensity. It's quite common for our clients to have many SIMS Designer PCs, but only a couple of these which also have a need for SAS for statistical reports. Sometimes just one PC needs to have SAS in a given Sensory Department using SIMS. Minimal SAS: a) SAS Base/Core b) SAS Stat. There is no need to buy the other expensive 20+ modules the SAS sales person will try to sell to you, at least not for SIMS. You may already have available a multiple-user license of SAS on-site at your location. If you have a Statistician on staff we recommend asking that person. Maybe cost is a non-issue.

SAS Enterprise Edition. Network installation. Yes, this package can install local usable copies of SAS. See your SAS Deployment Manager, install SAS Foundation, SAS Base, SAS Stat, etc. Do Not install "Client Only". Should install SAS into your local PC C:\Program Files\SASHome\x86\SASFoundation\9.4\ or similar folder locations.
