Windows 7 UAC and SIMS Software.

During April 2012 we made a few modifications to SIMS software and to Setup1.exe directly addressing with the challenges of Windows 7 security UAC.

1. Setup1.exe and Setup.exe are now “manifested” with header information to tell Windows 7 that it’s not always necessary to be an “Administrator” group member just to run the Setup installer. This will eliminate any annoying Windows 7 dialog box asking for Administrator username and password. The same manifest will also tell Windows 7 that the Setup is fully Windows 7 compatible. This will eliminate any annoying Windows 7 Compatibility warning dialog box which appears after the installation is completed successfully.

2. For Setup1 to be allowed to update and overwrite file C:\Program Files\SIMS2000\SIMS2000.exe the Windows User needs folder rights: Read/Write/Modify rights, or simply Full Control rights. We are seeing more SIMS client locations where only restricted Read & Execute rights are available by default. Give “Users” better rights, only needs to be done once on a SIMS PC.
Best practice: Administrator can can run this command: ICACLS "C:\Program Files\SIMS2000" /Grant Users:(OI)(CI)(F)
Which is the same thing as Windows Exploring to the folder, right clicking, security, grant Users full control.

3. SIMS software will try to use the users “MyDocuments” folder more aggressively in areas where the \Program Files\SIMS2000 app folder may have been used previously.
